Huawei Unveils its First Foldable Smartphone – Mate X with 8-inch screen at MWC 2019

As the MWC had kicked off, Huawei has finally unveiled its first foldable display smartphone as promised. To take against the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Fold foldable phone, Huawei has unveiled the Mate X smartphone at Barcelona. As seen in the earlier leaks, the Mate X features a foldable screen display that folds outwards and looks like a display wrapped smartphone.

The new innovative Mate X looks identical to the Royole Flex foldable that launched late last year but in a much impressive design. While the Royole Flex seemed like a prototype, the Mate X certainly appears more practical and advanced and feels as if it is ready to launch to the consumers.

The Mate X foldable phone from Huawei also differs from the Galaxy Fold as well. While the latter folds the display inwards creating a secondary screen outside when folded, the Mate X folds outwards to the device and wraps around from the middle. What this means is, the folded display on the front appears like a standard 19:9 ratio screen, and on the back, the other half of the display acts as a secondary screen alongside the triple cameras. All in all, the screen when unfolded creates a giant screen with Huawei’s Full View Display technology, which looks almost near to a square-shaped display.

On the front, when unfolded, there aren’t any bezels or front-facing cameras, but there are rear cameras on the back, which are tucked away under a plastic grip that allows you to hold the tablet-cum-smartphone without the need of touching the display. Furthermore, the plastic grip on the back beholds a triple camera lens setup as stated earlier. In addition, the secondary screen folded back beside the triple camera can also act as a viewfinder for your selfies as well.

As for this revolutionary designed Mate X’s specifications – it features an 8-inch screen, when unfolded with a resolution of 2480×2200 pixels and when folded, it features a 6.6-inch screen with 2480×1148 pixels, and on the rear, the folded display bears a 6.38-inches screen with 2480×892 pixels. The Mate X is power by the latest Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC that is also paired with Balong 5000 5G modem, which is claimed to be faster than the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 5G modem, according to the company. On the storage front, the Mate X features 8GB of RAM coupled with 512GB of internal storage.

And lastly, to power this giant 8-inch screen on the Mate X, the device comes with a 4500mAh battery setup, which is achieved by combing to batteries. These further utilize USB Type-C for charging, especially ultra-fast charging at 55W, which is presumably the first phone to have it. This technology is claimed to achieve 85% of charge within half an hour, which is quite impressive.

More detailed specifications of the Mate X smartphone is yet to be known. As for the pricing, the Mate X costs around $2600 (Rs 1,85,000 approx.) and is said to available from ‘mid-summer’ this year. It is still unclear whether this first foldable device from Huawei will be coming to India. So, what do you think of the foldable Mate X smartphone?
